Maryland Auto Inspection – What You Should Know

Maryland Auto Inspection by Liberty

Having your vehicle inspected is the law in most states, for annual safety standards and carbon emission levels. It pays to know the requirements where you live, and what you are obligated to do. Maryland Auto Inspection by Liberty Auto Centers is fast, safe and reliable.

Maryland requires emissions inspection as part of original or renewal vehicle registration. The Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) is in place to help keep our air and water clean. You can get your vehicle inspected at MVA locations or state licensed VEIP stations.

Maryland does not require annual safety inspection. However, if you are buying, selling, or transferring a vehicle it must first be inspected at an authorized safety inspection station.

What is the safety inspection?
For passenger cars, light trucks and SUVs, and trailers that are 20 feet in length or less, the safety inspection includes the steering system, wheel alignment, suspension, brakes, wheels/tires, fuel system, exhaust system, bumpers and fenders, lights, electrical system, mirrors, windows (glazing), wipers, hood, trunk, door handle latches, speedometer, odometer, driver’s seat, safety belts, motor mounts, gear shift indicator, universal and CV (constant velocity) joints, and emissions equipment. If the vehicle meets all safety standards, the registered inspection mechanic at Liberty Auto Centers will prepare and give you two copies of the Maryland Inspection Certificate, or electronically transmit the e-inspection to the MVA.

What happens if my vehicle fails the safety inspection?
If even one of these safety standards is not met, the problem is noted on the station’s inspection report. You must have it fixed within 30 days and re-inspected by the same inspection technician. You can have the authorized inspection station fix the problem, taking the vehicle to another facility for repairs, or handle the fix yourself.
